SHARP

The value engineer — small, cheap, reliable, and quietly first at things while nobody was looking.

Sharp enters the decade building copiers for offices that could never justify a Xerox contract, and leaves it an MFP maker. The heritage is real; the paperwork, less so.

Sharp entered copying in 1972 with the wet-process “Sharpfax” SF-201, put the first IC control in a copier with the SF-710, and in 1984 billed the Z-60 as the world’s smallest B4 copier on cartridge consumables. The SF-8200 of 1986 was — per Sharp’s own account, which is the only account — its first with an OPC drum. By 1990 the identity was fixed: sensible boxes, honest prices, a first-of-its-kind buried in the fine print.

The early nineties were peak analog. The SF-8300 (1989) had introduced automatic rotating paper drawers; the SD-2075 (1991) was the uncharacteristic muscle car, with a recirculating document handler and Sharp’s first air-feed paper transport. For its twentieth anniversary in copiers, 1992 brought the SF-2022 and SF-2027 — deliberately modest, pitched on low noise and small footprint. Other firms celebrate with chrome; Sharp celebrated with a quieter fan.

Below them sat the Z-series personal copiers, Z-50 through Z-88 — the copier on the side table of small businesses, schools and churches, cartridge-fed, sold like an appliance. The line survives chiefly in toner cross-reference tables, like a civilisation known from its pottery; a Z-88 service manual dated 1992 is the latest reliable carbon-dating.

The digital turn came early and cheaply, which was on-brand: AR-5040 (1994, electronic sorting), AR-5030F (1995, fax), AR-5132 (1996, Sharp’s first network MFP, years before “MFP” was the word), the “Digital Imager” desktops undercutting the majors, and the AR-C150 of 1999 closing the account with tandem-engine digital colour.

Speeds survive largely because a period EPA energy catalogue listed them; launch years for most of the SF fleet are gone. Where this page says unverified, the shard was found but not the kiln.

Three ways to buy a Sharp

The range in depth: the pottery, the fleet, and one machine that refused to touch its own paper.

Sharp’s ladder ran from a cartridge box on a side table to a seventy-five-copy flagship that levitated its paper — and every rung was priced a little under whatever you were about to say. A buyer’s tour, tier by tier.

The entry ticket: the Z-series

The dig report, continued. Our review established that the Z-series survives chiefly in toner cross-reference tables; range archaeology can now sort the shards into strata. The Z-50, Z-52, Z-55 and Z-57 all took the ZT-50TD1 toner family, and a shared glaze is how you date a settlement: one workshop, one period, four vessels. Above them lies the Z-70/72/75/76 layer — same consumables tradition, grander forms — and at the top the Z-85 and Z-88, the terminal stratum, a Z-88 service manual of 1992 marking roughly where the site was abandoned.

What the pottery was for: copying at walking pace in places where a service contract would have required a motion at the annual general meeting. Platen glass, a hand-fed tray, a cartridge; the finishing option was a stapler in the drawer. Sold through office-supply channels like a kettle, the Z went to church vestries, school front offices and one-solicitor practices. Canon’s PC-320 and PC-720 played the same game at 4 and 10 cpm — the 720 with a 70–141% zoom — and history has simply been kinder to Canon’s paperwork. The idea was the same size.

The engine room: the SF fleet

The SF line paid the rent. The anniversary pair of 1992 — SF-2022 at 22 cpm, SF-2027 at 27 (unverified, like most things Sharp did on purpose) — carried the small office; the SF-2035 brought 35 cpm and a weekly timer that switched itself off for the weekend, more discipline than most of its operators managed. Above them the SF-2040/2050/2052 ran to fifty-plus, and the SF-2050 shipped with duplex not merely fitted but on by default. The machine arrived with an opinion.

The trade-offs ran to type: ADF and sorter optional low in the fleet, standard higher up, and duplex cost speed in the honest Sharp manner — the SF-2020 quoted 20 cpm forward, 12 both-sided, and said so. Buyers: the three-partner accountancy, the staffroom, the branch office resisting head-office procurement. Against Ricoh’s FT5535 — 35 cpm, the trade’s unglamorous hero — the SF-2035 conceded nothing on speed and countered with the timer; the Ricoh dealer countered with a visit, and the deal went to whoever called that month.

The summit: air, then bits

The summit came in two ascents. The analog one is the SD-2075 of 1991: 75 cpm (unverified — the summit sits in cloud), a recirculating document handler, a finisher, and Sharp’s first air-feed paper transport, anatomised overleaf in Plate No. 26. Against Canon’s NP-8580 — 80 cpm, duplex standard, rated for 50,000–100,000 copies a month — it was the outsider’s bid for the print room: less pedigree, fewer options pages, a price that made the committee look twice.

The second ascent was digital and, being Sharp, arrived without ceremony: AR-5040 (1994, electronic sorting), AR-5030F (1995, fax aboard), then the AR-5132 of 1996 — copier, network printer and scanner in one 32 cpm box, years before the trade settled on “MFP” as the word. The “Digital Imager” desktops (AR-161 at 16 cpm, AR-201/207 at 20) undercut the majors from below, and the AR-C150 of 1999 closed the account with tandem-engine colour at roughly 15 cpm (unverified). By 2000 the summit was a foothill with a network socket, and Sharp already held the deed.
